POP, IMAP, and SMTP settings
Overview
These are the three main protocols for email clients to connect to your mail server:
- IMAP - Retrieve and manage emails (recommended)
- POP - Download and remove emails from server
- SMTP - Send emails
IMAP (Recommended)
What it does: Retrieves emails while keeping them on the server. Your email remains synchronized across all devices.
When to use:
- You check email on multiple devices (phone, tablet, computer)
- You want to access your email from anywhere
- You want to keep messages organized on the server
- You want a complete backup of your emails on the server

POP (Legacy)
What it does: Downloads emails from the server to your device and typically removes them from the server.
When to use:
- You only check email from one device
- You want to save storage space on the server
- You prefer emails stored locally on your computer
- You have limited server storage

Warning: Once downloaded and deleted from the server, emails cannot be accessed from other devices.
SMTP (Send Only)
What it does: Sends outgoing emails from your email client to the mail server for delivery.
Required for: All email clients that send messages
